Professionalism Still Matters

Darcy Staberg

After almost twenty years in real estate, I’ve seen this industry evolve in ways I never could have imagined. Technology has made information more accessible, social media has transformed how we market properties, and the pace of transactions seems faster than ever. But one thing hasn’t changed and shouldn’t: the importance of professionalism.

Lately, I’ve been reminded how much that word really means. Professionalism isn’t just about showing up in a blazer or having a polished website. It’s about how you communicate, how you collaborate, and how you take responsibility for the work you do, especially when things get hard.

In real estate, professionalism shows up in the details:

  • Answering your phone AND Returning phone calls

  • Knowing your market inside and out.

  • Being honest, even when the truth might disappoint a client.

  • Respecting other agents and the process, even when negotiations get tense.

Those small things build trust and trust builds everything else.

This career has taught me that real estate is as much about people as it is about property. Every transaction represents someone’s story, often during a major life change. Whether that’s a first home, a relocation, or saying goodbye to a place filled with memories, clients deserve an agent who handles that with care, not just enthusiasm.

I’ll admit, sometimes professionalism can feel like the lost art of our business. In an age of instant responses, trending posts, and flashy marketing, the slower, steadier approach can seem outdated. But I’ve built my business and my reputation on doing things the right way, not the fast way.

And while I can’t control how others work, I can control how I show up. With integrity. With respect. With professionalism. Every single time.

Because at the end of the day, titles and sales numbers come and go, but how you treat people, clients, colleagues, and competitors alike, that’s what truly lasts.
